History of Irakkamam Divisional Secretariat
Before 1999, the Irakkamam area was under the Sammanthurai Divisional Secretariat. The people campaigned for their own Divisional Secretariat, and the late Hon. M.H.M. Ashraff, Minister, worked to achieve it. Irakkamam was separated from Sammanthurai DS on 25 June 1999.
The division’s villages are listed below. The major town serving the area is Ampara. The division has 12 Grama Niladhari divisions and a population of 18,035. The majority of residents are Muslims, and agriculture is the main occupation.
